Preston Marshall - 2007 Industry Achievement Award
Mr. Preston Marshall has 30 years experience in communications and software and hardware system development. Currently he is a Program Manager with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Strategic Technology Office (STO). Before his assignment to DARPA's Strategic Technology Office, Mr. Marshall was employed by a number of systems and electronics companies. Mr. Marshall holds a B.S.E.E and M.S. Information Science from Lehigh University.
In his role as a DARPA program manager, Preston Marshall has been the key figure in the development of cognitive radio over the past six years. His work with the DARPA XG program has created a new field in the dynamic use of spectrum. This new way of managing the spectrum is now being incorporated into military radio systems. Several commercial firms have taken the principles developed by the xG program and are incorporating these concepts into commercial products. Specifically, the concepts developed under this program are impacting standardization activities such as IEEE 802.22, IEEE 802.11y and IEEE 802.16h.
Preston Marshall’s most recent projects WANN/WAND are developing software programmable $500 cognitive radios that can form an intelligent adaptive network. These programs have the potential to greatly alter the way that we do radio and network design, by emphasizing the adaptability of SDR technology to support intelligent processing that can observe, orient, and learn from its situation.
One must credit Preston Marshall for his technical vision that is revolutionizing the industry, both military and commercial.
